The Routine

As the days moved on, things started getting settled into a new normal.

I have to say, after being on bedrest for 5 weeks and fainting everytime I stood up, it felt SO good to not be pregnant anymore that I pretty much couldn't sit still. I cleaned the floors on my hands and knees, baked, cooked, did everything I hadn't been able to do in over a month. My mom kept telling me to take it easy, but I was so happy to be able to stand and not faint.

The funny thing with doing all this stuff was that I was still dying from the gazillion stitches from giving birth. So, to ease the pain, I took a diaper and put crushed ice inside of it (it pulls open pretty easily) and used that to ease the pain. The only problem was that it made me waddle even worse than when I was pregnant. You can ask any friend who came by after I gave birth and they will tell you I sang the ice diapers praises!

The other thing was that my foot (previously mentioned affectionately as shrek foot) did not get better-- it got worse! Remember that Croc it got stuck in? I couldn't even get it in after I got home from the hospital. I am happy to report that about a month or two later, it did eventually return to normal size. I was slightly worried for a bit, but I had a newborn to take care of so I couldn't spend much time dwelling on the size of my foot and ankle.

After the whole fiasco of forgetting we had a baby the first night, we decided we needed a night time routine. We started this routine about a week after Ike was born and we still do it to this day. It makes bed time so easy for us-- Isaac goes right to sleep!

About 5:30 Isaac eats dinner (this was added at 4 months when we started solids) of oatmeal and a fruit or veggie.

At 6:00 we put him on the changing table and take off his clothes. He LOVES being naked! We let him hang out and talk to him about his day, sing songs, all with only a soft lamp on for light.

Every other night we do a bath about 6:20. He goes in the bathtub with his dad and floats, swims, has a blast. He is a water baby all the way! (We did a baby bath for the first two months, then a bath seat for about a week. He loves to be free in the water so we ended up just jumping in with him.)
(First bath ever!)

At 6:30, after the bath or naked time, depending on the night, I read to him On the Night You Were Born. (Side note: I read this to Ike when I was pregnant and now, whenever I start to read the book, no matter what he's doing, he will stop and listen intently.)

After the story I give him a "babysage" as we call it. I rub Aveno non-scented lotion on his sensitive body (we still use sensitive wipes and diapers). While I do this we say our prayers. Then I diaper him up, put on his pjs and bring him to bed. We kiss him goodnight, tell him that we love him, I nurse him and he is out by 7:00. No fuss and I love it.

This is my favorite part of our day!
