After we got home from the hospital that first night, we took the baby out of his carseat and showed him quickly around the house. We were all exhausted so we got dressed for bed, laid Isaac in his sleeper, and promptly fell asleep.
A few hours later we awoke to the sound of a crying baby. I shot up out of bed and Richie rubbed his eyes, looking around confused. We looked at each other and thought, "What's that?"
After three minutes-- literally-- it set in, we have a baby next to us! And it's crying!
We were not prepared at all. I stumbled to turn on the light, picked up Isaac and tried to soothe him. He wouldn't stop crying.
Suddenly it hit me- he was probably hungry.
I sent Richie to the kitchen to get a bottle. Too bad I hadn't set up a single thing. He stumbled trying to find bottle pieces, shouting to me to ask what you even put in a bottle. Never mind that I was trying to nurse Ike, I couldn't remember that, let alone that I had just had a baby.
We managed to feed Isaac and get him back to sleep that night. We learned a valuable lesson: be prepared before going to sleep. From then on we set up the boppy, diapers, wipes, burp clothes, everything we could possibly need, before going to bed.
And the next night when a baby woke us up crying, it only took us about 30 seconds to remember we had a baby.
